For the Children's Sake Foundation serves at risk children - the orphaned, vulnerable, disadvantaged, impoverished and marginalized children found throughout Africa. These children live in areas without enough government schools available. But even if there were, their parents or guardians are unable to pay the costs of uniforms, books, and materials necessary for attendance at government schools. For at risk children, the local Christian school is often the only school available to them.
Teachers
We have found that even teachers with a one-or two-year teaching certificate come to us with very little understanding about the teaching and learning process. Some ideas are totally foreign to most of these teachers, such as asking questions and encouraging responses instead of just lecturing, or of teaching expected behaviors and using consequences rather than always caning to impact student behavior. Yet, despite initial skepticism and fierce debate when first presented with such concepts, they do work to implement the new practices and are always thrilled by the results of increased student learning and positive classroom environment.
Directors
Most Christian school directors with whom we work have little education beyond high school, little understanding of child development , and little idea of how to a manage a school. They do have a desire to serve the orphaned and otherwise vulnerable children in their area for Christ, believe strongly in the need for the children to be educated, and therefore start schools to help meet the needs they see.
