Gisooya lives at home with her mother, two brothers and three sisters. Her father passed away.
At home, Gisooya helps her mother by taking care of the baby. Her family is destitute, owning fewer than 10 camels, goats, cows or sheep and having no father to help obtain more. Her family's diet most likely consists of a cup of milk and a bowl of gruel each per day. Gisooya receives a balanced meal at school every day.
Gisooya's best subject at school is Kiswahili. She attends church and Sunday school and loves skipping rope.
